With over a decade of experience releasing music in the industry for public consumption, Toy Taha has gained quite a notable reputation for her solo career and songwriting with a worldwide fanbase on the indie music scene. Not content to rest on her laurels, she is always building towards the next release, adding more timeless classics to her repertoire.

Toy Taha is an American singer, songwriter, arranger and performance artist from Philadelphia, PA. At age 5, Taha’s musicality first developed as she began randomly singing big vocal songs that her mother would play on vinyl by powerhouse vocalists like Shirley Murdoch, Teena Marie, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman and Whitney Houston. Taha's soulfulness grew as her paternal grandfather would play Muddy Waters, Bobby Blue Bland, James Brown, Aretha, B.B. King and Ray Charles on vinyl and many other artists with really soulful voices, so it became embedded in her and she loved it so much and wanted to hear more and more. Her father introduced her to a more eclectic side of music and he would play Bob Marley, N.W.A., Patti LaBelle, Jon Lucien, Rachelle Ferrell and Public Enemy on cassette. Taha states, "as far as I can remember, I’ve been a singer and a creative and an avid music lover my entire life because I was always surrounded by music and it gave me so much joy and something to look forward to."

Taha expanded her musical palette to many genres from opera to jazz and developed her signature sound by studying her inspirations and incorporating these influences into her fusion of R&B and Soul. Toy Taha attributes her vocal and songwriting abilities to Michael & Janet Jackson, Prince, Teena Marie, Amel Larrieux, Beyoncé, Aretha, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Stevie Wonder and more.

 

Toy Taha started out writing poems out of solitude, which developed into raps, which transformed into vocal songs. Her childhood and adolescence revolved around performing arts singing on the Philadelphia National Choir, creating cheer & dance routines for the West Oak Lane Wildcats and even more extracurricular activities ranging from drill team to colorguards, but nothing was more fulfilling than her deep love and passion for music. Too shy, she very seldomly allowed anyone other than immediate family hear her sing. 

 

Leading a private life, Taha rarely discloses details of her personal life, treasuring the sacredness. She would much rather give glimpses in song. Toy Taha released a promotional project in 2013, entitled, I Am Woman, which gained a great deal of attention from columns and supporters across the USA, but she was not exactly happy with the final product as the project was released raw, unmixed and unmastered. So, Taha rededicated herself to improving her craft and honing in on her skills to deliver a more quality body of work and also in that timeframe, Taha switched her career from Kinesiology to Nursing. Yes, she is a singing nurse!

 

Taha’s latest EP entitled, EIGHT released July 1st 2022 gained worldwide attention. Led by the single, “Suite EFX,” which was written and arranged by Toy Taha and produced by Grammy-Award winning producer Dreamlife (NAS, Summer Walker, Ari Lennox, Snoop). “Suite EFX” in conjunction with the opening EP track “Loving On Me” charted #2 on the Global Soul Chart in the UK, which is the only data driven chart. The empowering anthem also charted at #7 on the Radio Airplay Experts R&B chart in the USA and #6 iTunes R&B/Soul Chart and #25 iTunes Overall (All Genres) both in the Philippines following heavy airplay globally. Taha landed on massive playlists and indie soul charts stateside and internationally including Italy, Australia, France and “Suite EFX” charted #51 iTunes R&B/Soul in Germany. 

 

Toy Taha composes all of her lyrics and arrangements by herself. Taha’s lyrics are immersed in themes of nostalgia, empowerment, sexuality and declarations of love. Taha’s reemergence is sure to continue making waves in the genres of R&B, midnight soul, quiet storm and more.

 

Toy Taha started performing live in 2021 at local Open Mic nights with professional band the Right Tyme Players at Milo The Meetinghouse and Nick’s Northeast in Philadelphia, PA. This artist works hard to deliver soulful music nationally and internationally. Stay tuned!
